THE WET SCRUBBER AND ABSORBER FOR AIR POLLUTION CONTROL 

 

 

The term “Wet Scrubbers” came into fashion after World War II as people became more aware of the negative effect they were having on the earth’s environment.  Along with other technology, Wet Scrubbers were and still are seen as an efficient way of cleansing industrial, commercial and municipal vapor emissions prior to their release into the atmosphere.

 

Actually, Wet Scrubbers are broken down into a number of categories.  Although Wet Scrubbers are most often used for Air Pollution Control applications, the term only refers to the devices used to capture particulate or mists/droplets that behave like particulate.  Devices used to capture vapors or odors are called “Wet Absorbers” since they take advantage of a specific liquid (frequently but not always water) having the ability to dissolve a specific gas or gasses.

 

WET SCRUBBERS

 

There are numerous designs all used with the intent of removing solids or mists from gas via physical means and transferring them into a bulk liquid.  The overriding concept is to first bring the gas to its dew point with respect to the liquid used.  This is done by evaporation and humidification.  Very little material removal can occur until the gas is completely at its dew point.

 

There are a number of methods of moving the material from gas to liquid. All involve collision or “impingement” as it is known in this industry.  A number of factors affect the ability of material to transfer.  First the smaller the material to be transferred, the more difficult the job.  Second the lower the material’s affinity for the liquid, the more difficult the job.  Finally the nature of the material in the gas affects removal.  Many contaminants must be condensed into a droplet before there is a chance for removal and this has a significant impact on the functioning of the equipment.

§                     Venturi Scrubbers

§                     Tray Scrubbers

§                     Aerosol Scrubbers

Technology offers all the above designs.  We have over 30 years in the industrial air pollution control business and have spent much time and effort  refining our venturi scrubber designs.  Our venturi design which uses an aerodynamic plug is the most successful venturi design in the world.  D.R. Technology can customize a design specific to an application to achieve the highest particle collection at a given pressure drop which minimizes electrical usage.  Our air pollution control equipment also minimizes manufacture and installation costs and maximizes efficiency.

 

WET ABSORBERS

 

These are the devices used to remove vapors and odors from emitted gas.

These rely on intimate contact with significant residence time to effect the transfer.  Various gases have varying affinity for liquids. It is necessary to quantify this attraction to realistically and economically remove this material to the efficiency necessary to satisfy emission requirements.

 

Some types of contactors available for this application include:

 

§         Packed Bed Absorbers

§         Tray style Absorbers

§         Spray style Absorbers

§         Spray Dry Injection type Absorbers.

 

D.R. Technology offers its industrial/municipal absorber designs for control of pollutants from noxious fumes, acid vapors, odors, ammonia and amines among others and has a multitude of public and proprietary design data available to minimize cost and maximize efficiency.

 

Frequently emissions contain both particulate and noxious fumes such as industrial coal boiler flue gas.  DR Technology has the advantage of being able to be a single source for designs such as sulfur dioxide and flyash reduction units.  Designs using various chemical reagents such as lime-limestone, sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate are available.  D.R. Technology also has the technology to use seawater to reduce sulfur dioxide efficiently.
